Re:Stop giving your daughters male names! By Kimum 3 Years, 3 Months Ago I agree and disagree at the same time (though to have an opinion about this)
I don't like to see girl's with the anme Ryan or James (no offense to any James or Ryan around here) but i really like unissex names. I think it's up to the parents but i personally don't like to see girls with very masculine names. - Kim

Re:Stop giving your daughters male names! By soleil 3 Years, 3 Months Ago Personally, I agree with the original poster. I'm not a fan of putting traditionally masculine names on girls for a few reasons. Mostly, it's just NMS. I also wonder about the connections between identity development and naming conventions. It's interesting to me.
I think one of the problems is that with this trend there seems to be massive amount of misinformation and a lack of understanding and correct usage of terminology. For example, there seems to be confusion differentiating between "unisex" names and using boy names on girls. The first, unisex names, are those that by definition have no gender association in their meaning/origin. Examples of this would include the various species of trees that people use to name their children: Cypress, Rowan, Aspen, Cedar, etc. The second thing, which is something to which the original poster refers, is using names that are traditionally masculine in their origin. Here's where the lines get crossed: Using boy names on a girl does not make it unisex. It means you're using a boy's name on a girl. I'm not making judgements about this here, but clarifying what is going on. I think this distinction is important to understand. My personal aesthetics don't necessarily subscribe to using boy names on girls, but it does seem to be an interesting phenomenon. I haven't quite decided what I think some of the more long term implications of this are (not saying that these are good or bad things) just that I think this poses some interesting questions. Granted there are some boy names on girls that I honestly do find absurd. I find it really bizarre when girls are named with names whose meanings mean "son of..." to me that is weird. I just want to say, I'm not arguing with anyone's right (depending on their respective country) to name their children what they want. I'm just stating where I sit on the fence. I'm just a girl name for girls and boy name for boys kind of gal Last Edit: 2009/07/29 05:43 By soleil.

Re:Stop giving your daughters male names! By Thislittlelight 3 Years, 3 Months Ago I know im late in the game but. . . . . .
I know both a little girl named Avery as well as a little boy. Personally i would prefer Avery on a girl but i honestly dont like the name personally. . . where i live Avery is a brand of printer paper. So thats a no no for me. But along the lines of girls having boys names. . . im a little on the 50/50 side. Where i work i once got a customer who named her daugheters Logan and Ryan. . to me. . in my generation those where stricly boy's names but whose to say in 30 or so years those wont be the norm for girls. Point-in-case---> Lauren, Shannon and Ashley--> about 50 or so years back those were pretty much boy's names only and it was unheard of o name your girls those names. But now it is very rare to find a boy named any of those names and more often then not if you do then they are usually older gentlemen. Anywho thats my two cents Sara

By beksi21 3 Years, 3 Months Ago You dont know that Avery was originally a boys name, my friends Grandmothers name, is AVERY!
There are a lot of names used for male/female. Not to sound rude but i think you should just let it go, people name there children what THEY like, not what YOU like.
