My eight-year-old daughter wants to change her name because she has the same name as her mother who left us two years ago and the memory was too sad for her that she's been asking to change her name since. I'm not familiar at all about the name change procedure and due to my job, we're always moving. A friend told me that we have to stay in the same county for at least 6 months before we can do the name change. Since my daughter will start a new school this fall she wants to have her name change before then. Did anybody know if there's a way to do it faster? How long does it usually take for a name to be changed? because she's very bothered by the fact that she has the same name as her mom.

I think the answer will depend largely on where you live. I'm in California and you have to list the name change and court date in the paper for several weeks prior to the court date. It might take longer for you since both parents are not requesting the name change.

She could always go by her middle name for school next year if you are unable to change her name due to your moving for work.

We live in Pennsylvania now. Do you know how to list the name change on the paper? Do people usually read them? I wouldn't want my ex-girlfriend finding out and locate where we are. She never wanted the child in the first place so I always have the sole custody, she's just living with us because she doesn't have any income.
