They should be able to tell on the ultrasound.

Well fraternal twins can look identical, the difference is if they come from the same egg or not and whether they share the placenta.

The only way I can really say that I would know if they were identical or fraternal was if they were the same sex, there's a possibilty that they are identical, and if they are not the same sex then they are fraternal.

The only true way to tell is through DNA testing. Also depending on when the egg splits it makes it more difficult. And earlier spilt means fusion of the crions are more likely, which will present as identicals but will be fraternal.

I was told four different things before my girls were born. After testing, we found out they were all indentical.

There are some ways to tell that they are not identical, if they don't have one of these matching then they are fraternal:
Blood Type: Identicals must be the same blood type
Eye Color: Identicals will have the same eye color
Hair: Identicals will have the color and type (curly/straight)

Also despite common belief, there are cases of Boy/Girl Identical Twinning. BUT the girl will suffer from a genetic abnormality called Turner's Syndrome.
