Do try to foster a protective relationship between your oldest child and the baby. My oldest nephew is 7 years older than his next younger brother, and while he doesn't willingly admit it, I can tell that he resents his brother usurping his position as not just only child, but as the baby as well. They are 14 and 7 right now, and I must say they are the farthest from friends. My oldest nephew is much closer and more protective of his 2 youngest siblings.

I think it could have been avoided if my sister had emphisized the "You're the big brother" thing a little more, and made him more a part of the baby's care.

Thanks for that advice....Yeah the last thing I want is for Taylah to feel that way. She has been made to feel like that with her Dad and Step Mums kids and has always been scared that I will do the same. I keep reasurring her I wont and that she is just as important and special and loved.
She is excited so far which is good..I just hope it stays that way.

I'm sure Taylah will be very excited when ur wee babys born. Me and my brother Joseph are 7 years apart and my daughter Riley will be 5 years older than her soon to be little brother. Just give her lots of fuss. Ocasionly I used to feel left out but all eldest children do! Let her be involved when the baby is born. Let her help you feed it and she'll feel more like a big sister,
Good Luck,
Beth xx

My friend has a 2 children 7 years apart. The older one loves being a big sister. While they were expecting the second they made sure Kayla felt a big part of it. They let her pick some of the things for the baby, like the bouncy seat and high chair and some clothes and toys. They also decided the babys first name and chose 3 names for the middle name and let Kayla choose between the 3. It made her feel like a big part of it and it worked very well. I think if she had done it differently Kayla wouldn't have handled it so well. Especially since not only was Kayla an only child, she was a very spoiled only child! Good Luck and Congratulations!
