Has this happened to anyone else?
By CKA 6 Months, 3 Weeks Ago
I had an ultrasound done at 7 weeks because I am high-risk having a previous ectopic pregnancy. When I had that U.S., twins were found. My husband and I were grateful for the blessing, but extremely stressed over the financial, physical and mental burden of what lay ahead as far as taking care of twins when we already have 3 other children.
We finally got used to the idea, and after my first trimester was complete, we told our friends and family. We got mixed reactions of course. The most common being... "glad for you, but glad it's not me!"
Anyway... my doctor set me up w/a specialist who does U.S's on multiples and last week Thursday we went for another U.S.
I am now 19 weeks. When the specialist did the U.S, he only found one baby. There was no trace remaining of the other baby. He states it would have been absorbed by my body prior to 10 weeks. He said this is common. He states usually the only women that receive U.S.'s so early are women who have undergone IVF and at 6 weeks they usually show 2 or more babies, and after the 10th week, there is only one baby remaining 50% of the time.
We were quite taken back by this news. To see my babies hearts beating at 7 weeks, and then 12 weeks later there is only one remaining was a shock to me. I do believe it was what was best because carrying twins would have been pretty dangerous for me (during my ectopic, a corner of my uterus was removed so I have risk of rupture)... but nobody I talk to is familiar w/the idea that 50% of the time, multiples become singles prior to the 10th week of pregnancy.
The specialist states that most women never know they were even pregant w/twins because early ultrasounds are not common.
PS: We are delighted that we are having a little girl and the U.S. shows her to be healthy.

This happened to a friend of mine. She was carrying triplets and had an early ultrasound as well. They did a second ultrasound at 16 weeks and there were only 2 babies. One had just absorbed back into her body. She lost another one at 22 weeks and had an actual miscarriage. The third one was born strong and healthy about 2 weeks early. The body is an amazing thing and pregnancy really magnifies what it can do.

I am so sorry this happened. It is heartbreaking anytime you loose a baby, no matter how early. I have had 2 early miscarriages myself, and I loved those babies from the time I found out I was pregnant, but know they are safe with God now.
I do know someone this happened to. When I taught school, my principal's son and his wife had this happen to them. She went for the first ultrasound and they saw 2, then later, it was only 1. She said the same thing happened to them that happened to you- when the baby died, it was absorbed into her body. She went on to have the 1 baby- a healthy little girl. I pray for and hope the best for you throughout the rest of your pregnancy and with your sweet baby girl.

Thank you both for your replies. It is comforting to know that both women you heard of did have a healthy baby in the end. It is hard to not worry over the baby I am now carrying, but the doctor said she is healthy and developing normally and the lost embryo will have no effect on her developement.
I see my other children and am so grateful that they are healthy, so sometimes I find myself taking for granted that any child I would conceive would be healthy.
Thanks again! CKA
