Cheese during pregnancy?
By reinne 4 Months, 3 Weeks Ago
Hi fellow moms and moms to be! I know that soft cheeses should be avoided during pregnancy but i also read somewhere that if it's from PASTEURIZED MILK it's okay to consume. 'Coz I really love FETA cheese and I bought one yesterday because the ingredients said PASTEURIZED MILK, SALT, RENNET,
STARTER CULTURE & VEGETABLE OIL. Now i'm having second thoughts whether to eat it with my salad or not.

Have you eaten cheese while pregnant? What kind of cheese and how often did you consume it during pregnancy?

Please feel free to comment about this or if you have any information about cheeses let me know. Thanks in advance!

My nutritionist said absolutely NO gourmet cheese UNLESS pasteurized. Unpasteurized cheese or juices have bacteria that can harm the fetus even if it doesn't harm us. Alot of foods have bacteria that I wasn't aware of until pregnancy (sushi and alfalfa sprouts are examples). Hope this helps!

I was the same with Mayonaise, i was worried because it maybe had raw egg white in, but if you read the labels, as long as the things are pasteurised... thats fine. ask your midwife if you are still unsure

I know exactly how you feel because I love bleu cheese. I am also confused about fish. My midwife started a long list of no this fish and no that fish then she said to "just try to avoid any fish from the ocean." I love seafood!

JBV6 -- did you ever consume any PASTEURIZED cheese while pregnant?

BRANDI3680 -- I've been reading a lot also about that (ex: tuna) although in my previous pregnancies
I think I did eat seafoods and my 2 girls are healthy and normal so, I don't know.
I love them too and it's like our staple food where I live.

SKYE -- I love your ID skye hehehe! I've been reading a lot of labels lately and I feel like I'm
becoming paranoid in everything that comes into my mouth!

But what's bothering me more about my cheese is another ingredient, STARTER CULTURE. Have you guys heard anything bad about this? Is this good for pregnant women?

Brandi3680, fish is my favorite, too- any kind of fish, and any kind of seafood! When I was pregnant, I ate Grouper several times before I realized that certain types of fish I wasn't supposed to be eating. My baby turned out fine. I don't know if Grouper was one of those kinds of fish to avoid; does anyone else know? I also ate fried oysters and shrimp. Has anyone ever heard anything about that? I guess it was okay, since my son is healthy!
