Hi everyone, I was just curious about how many of you have heard of Blighted ovaries? I think thats how you spell it. It makes you have all of the symptoms of pregnancy sickness, fatigue, it will even make a pregnancy test come out positive! But your stomach even grows like you are pregnant. But I had a friend who has recently had this and what it is, its a ovary that dosent get fertilized but it grows just like it would if it was a real baby. Some people like my friend who have had this think they are pregnant but really they arent. Isnt that crazy?

What you are talking about is called blighted ovum. It is sometimes called an "early pregnancy failure". The egg is fertilized and implants in the uterus and placenta begins to develop, but the baby (embryo) stops growing very early or does not grow at all. It does cause pregnancy symptoms but they eventually go away when it stops growing and spotting or bleeding can occur. A friend of mine had this happen to her. She had a positive pregnancy test, and when she went to her first doctor visit, they could see the sac but not the baby. They had her come back a week later and it was still the same. They told her it was a blighted ovum and she started spotting and bleeding later, and she had to have a D&C because she did not pass all of the pregnancy on her own. It is a pregnancy, it's just that the baby fails to grow like it should or does not develop at all like it is supposed to.

You're right! I couldnt figure out the name to save my life! And I just learned about it yesterday! Isn't that scary? I would hate for that to happen to me I would be so upset! Especially since once you have a Blighted Ovum, your chances of getting pregnant are not so good anymore. But my friend already has three beautiful kids so she wasnt too upset about it happening to her. It happened to her while she was at school when we first started clinicals, she atarted miscarrying and she had on white scrubs! And she said it was awful pain, like sever birth pains. Its just weird I have never heard it before.

Well, you can still get pregnant after having one. My friend was pregnant 3 months after that happened to her. Plus I know another woman that had one and now has 2 sons. So that is not true that your chances are any less.
