Re:Glucose Test... HELP!!! By happy2bme 3 Months, 2 Weeks Ago Yes, I had to take the 3 hour test, but mine came out just fine. A friend of mine that just had her second baby had the G.D. with this pregnancy, and my cousin that just had her baby had it, too. My friend had to take insulin shots, but my cousin did not. It goes away as soon as the baby is born. But my friend who had to take the shots loves sweets and had a hard time staying away from them and ate as much as she could without getting into trouble with her sugar. I think it might have been better for her if she had just totally stayed away from eating and drinking sweets.
My advice to you is to totally stay away from sweets and only drink water a day or two before you have to go take that test. Because sometimes it can show up even if you eat or drink a little sugar the day before. But you may want to try to do this throughout your pregnancy anyway. I got to where I only drank water and didn't eat alot of sweets anyway, just ate healthy. I really think this, along with walking, kept me from ever having blood pressure problems, too.

Re:Glucose Test... HELP!!! By happy2bme 3 Months, 2 Weeks Ago Oh, and the weight of my friend's baby was 8 lb. 3 oz, even though they estimated him at 9 lb. 9 oz. on sonogram the day before; and my cousin's baby was only 5 lb. 11 oz. So just because someone has g.d. doesn't mean they are going to have a big baby. That is one reason why if someone does have it they treat it so that the baby does not get too big. But try not to worry, because I think alot of women do have to take that second test and it turns out fine.

First off, don't freak out. Second off, I'm in my 33rd week of pregnancy with GD and I'm also a nurse. So I feel very comfortable with this... This is totally doable. I am watching my diet carefully, trying to walk 3-4 times a week and checking my blood sugar 4 times a day. Now, if I wasn't able to control it with my diet then they would have to put me on medication, however, to date I've been successful for 4 weeks in controlling it with my diet. My baby is a little larger than normal, but he's not gigantic by any means. The three hour test is long, but not painful and after it's over you'll know how to safely procede with your pregnancy. What does gestational diabetes mean for you later in life? It means an increased chance of having GD with future pregnancies and it also means an increased chance of developing diabetes later in life. But diabetes later in life can possibly be avoided too - if you carefully watch your diet, exercise and maintain a healthy weight after the pregnancy. Your OBGYN may have you continue to check your blood sugars after pregnancy for a while just to be sure your body is returning to normal. What does GD mean for your baby? It means a couple of things.... one, he/she may be a little larger than normal. May mean that you have to deliver early (but this will be up to your OBGYN and isn't always the case). It also means that after delivery your baby has a chance of dropping his/her blood sugar levels because they are used to the higher levels you have had with the GD. So what the nurses after delivery do is check your baby's blood sugar and monitor them closely, often rechecking it multiple times. Sometimes babies from GD moms have to go to special care nurseries for closer monitoring for a few hours to a day or so - this does not mean your baby is sick. This could be hospital policy or simply a proactive way to keep a closer eye on your little one as their body balances out after being in your body with higher blood sugar levels throughout the pregnancy. Just remember, listen to your doctor, do a lot of research and ask tons of questions. Even though I'm a nurse I have questions every week when I see the doctor..... After all, every woman and every pregnancy is different. If your doctor sees that you are very active in carrying your baby to term in a healthy manner then they will be more open to allowing you to continue to have some control over the remainder of your pregnancy. Best of luck!!!!

By LandonsMom 3 Months, 2 Weeks Ago Jessica,
I almost forgot... When you go back for your 3 hour test it will be a fasting test so it won't matter what you have eaten the day before. The multiple blood draws throughout the 3 hour test show how your body absorbs and uses the sugar you drink (in that wonderfully sweet drink they make you down). Basically, during pregnancy your placenta puts of hormones that affect the way your body uses the sugar (from sweets, carbohydrates). This hormone counteracts what your body normally does to breakdown and use these carbohydrates and sugar. Some women, even though they have this hormone from the placenta don't have any problems and never develop GD. Others do! It's just your body and nothing you did wrong!

By Jessica P 3 Months, 2 Weeks Ago Thank you so much for the great advise... I appreciate it so much. It's been a little hard not knowing why things are happening the way they are when it has been a BEAUTIFUL pregnancy. I haven't even been sick ONE day. I've felt just like myself. So, I'm getting discouraged, and almost feeling like they are just putting me through the ringer!
But now I know that failing this test for the first time is NOT unusual. Lots of people have to take the three hour.
