Studies have shown that having a baby vaginally actually makes your child smarter than one that was born c-section. Something to do with the pressure on the brain as the child comes down the birth canal.

However, don't go around saying children that were born c-section are stupid. That isn't what the study suggested.

Also...as far as natural (meaning no drugs)...each women has to make that choice on her own. I have had babies both ways and I would NEVER have a baby without being on drugs.

Drug free is always best for the baby but not always best for the mommy. You have to consider the risks to the baby and an epidural is about the safest after no meds. at all. Most oral pain meds. that they give you can only be given in the first part of your labor so that they don't make the baby drowsy or interfere with baby's breathing.
Usually the delivery is when you feel the most pain and by then it would be too late to get an epidural.
I have experienced all three and I highly recommend an epidural. Its nice to be able to relax and enjoy the experience, although for some women, its just as enjoyable without any meds. or epidurals.
Good luck and best wishes on your pregnancy and birth.

Is it possible to have an epidural and have a water birth at the same time? Because I have been seriously thinking about having a water birth.

im on my 4th baby and it NEVER goes to plan...dont sweat it.. it will happen just as its supposed to... but i would suggest that u dont opt for en elective C-section, my 1st was cesearean and consecutive vaginal births after and i tell u what, the recovery is so much easier after a natural birth (((by natural i DONT MEAN drug free btw..lol)))

good luck and dont fret

You can not have an underwater birth if you want an epidural or narcotics, however most women do not need pain medicine during a water birth. As quoted from lovestoknow.

Hope this helps.
