Dental
By garza12383 2 Months, 2 Weeks Ago
I'm a dental assistant and I just found out that i'm 7 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I wanted to know if anybody knows for sure if I should be taking x-rays on patients or not. And will it harm my baby if I do.

I think you should ask your doctor first

i think in the early stages u should at the very least be wearing a lead apron , or leaving the room, but it is definitely something ur GP((MD in US)) will know about

As long as you are not in the room with the patient while the x rays are being taken you are safe. The lead in the walls will protect you. You will need to get a radiation monitor for your belly to make sure baby is not being exposed. I'm a CT Technologist and this is what is done in hospitals.

I am a Dentist. We always say that a PA or a bite-wing are ok on a pregnant women IF she NEEDS Tx, (elective procedures should wait) But usually stay away from X-rays with a "bun in the oven". Hey, you can stay out of the room and wear an apron, or whatever, but if you were my assistant, I would ban you from the X-ray machine and have someone else do them. There is plenty to do in a dental office without exposing yourself to the possibility of radiation exposure. I hope this helps. I have two children and one on the way, so I am protective of my wife. Your dentist should understand.
