I asked that questions too, an the way it was explained to me was tht even though you are pregnant for 40 weeks, its broken down into 10 months because they decided each month had 4 weeks in it, and as you know a normal month usually has a couple more days added to it. So technically you are only pregnant for 9 months (40 weeks), I think too it helps with the fact that some people have babies before their 40 weeks is up.

I don't know if this helps, but thats what I was told.

OK THIS IS HOW IS WAS EXPLAINED TO ME....... YOU ARE PREGNANT FOR 9 CALENDAR MONTHS BUT TEN 4 WEEK MONTHS. BECAUSE NOT ALL MONTHS HAVE 4 EXACT WEEKS IN THEM IT ADDS UP WEIRD,I THINK THATS WHY THEY USE THE WEEKS NOW BECAUSE IT IS LESS CONFUSING. HOEP THIS HELPS AND YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT I WAS SAYING

Well, full term is usually 36-40 weeks with the average woman delivering at about 38 weeks.

It is 9 months, but it may go over to the 10th month.

Also, Gestation in a human being is 266 days. (9 months is actually 274 days; 40 weeks = 280 days.). The reason that most doctors say 40 weeks, even though that is not biologically correct, is that they start the count at the first day of your last period. That adds 10- 15 days to the actual number of days of gestation. From the day of actual conception to birth is about 266 days.

You r actually pregnant for 9 months. Ok here's the simple math, doctors start to check the gestation form the first day of your menstral cycle, and we all know that ovulation do not occur then, so you would have to less 2 weeks from that. So then we would end with 38 weeks and also remember that all months do not have equal days in them so the extra 14 days is to basically even things out. That's why if your baby is born like two weeks before the said due date it's ok because full term is actually 38-40 weeks of pregnancy.
Hope that helps.

Hey, i know i've posted a repond to you but i got more info on another site. This is from a professional:

We count the weeks of pregnancy starting from the first day of your last menstrual period (also called your "LMP" because that's the way most medical practitioners do it these days. A few may count pregnancy from your estimated date of conception, which is the day that you were likely to be ovulating during the month you became pregnant. (This is usually about two weeks after your last period started.) While the estimated day of conception is literally the day you first became pregnant, most practitioners don't count pregnancy from that date because there's no way to know for sure when you really did ovulate and conceive. So they take the easier route and go back to the first day of your last menstrual period. Then they count 40 weeks from that day to find your due date. (On the other hand, if you're counting pregnancy from your estimated date of conception, your due date will be only 38 weeks from that day.) And by the way, your last menstrual period is also the date from which your practitioner will measure your baby's gestational age. That is, when you're 20 weeks pregnant (starting from your LMP), your baby's gestational age is also 20 weeks
