How to get a 13 month old to sleep?
By Justins1favmom 1 Month, 2 Weeks Ago
My son sleeps very well and all through the night but its so hard to get him to sleep! The only way he is able to fall a sleep is if I nurse him (for nap and bed) And im try to wean him (the only time he does nurse is to fall asleep). So does any one have any ideas to help him to go to sleep without the comfort of well my breast so that way I can completely wean him.
Thank you for any advice in advance

I weaned my daughter at 19 months from breastfeeding. When she was about the same age as your son, I decided I didn't want her falling asleep on the breast (much like your dillema) So I sat in a rocking chair with her for about 5 minutes and let her nurse, rubbed her head and sang to her like usual. But at the end of the 5 minutes, I would hug her, tell her I loved her and put her right in her crib. she did not like this at all. For the first 5 nights, she screamed non-stop for almost an hour. Time slowly lessened and by the end of the first week, I was able to put her in her crib, walk out of the room to a little whimper and then out like a light she would go. now of course all children are different, but that worked extrememly well for me. But know ahead of time that it's going to be extremely difficult to let him cry. It was awful for me. I felt like the worse mom. But then someone told me that a baby has never died from over-crying. Lol. They also said we will all be much better off once she is over this. Now we all sleep at night very well. There are some nights (a year Later) that she will cry on and off for 10 minutes or so, but I leave her in there and let her put herself to sleep.
Also, that first week when you are starting this new routine, let him cry for 10 minutes before going in there. Then when you walk in, don't pick him up...very important...just stand next to the crib, tell him you love him and pat his back or whatever soothes him. If you pick him up, you will kind of have to start all over again. I hope this helps. Let me know please!

You may have to give him to your husband to let him rock him to sleep. I started weaning my son from breastfeeding after he spent his first night away from home (I had to go to the hospital for some tests) and it was the week after his first birthday. After this, I cut out all nursings except one time, first thing in the morning. We did that until he was 15 months, and then stopped completely. I did the first thing in the morning because I didn't want him in the habit of it being at night before going to sleep. And it was easy to stop after we cut down to once a day like that. But as for getting him to sleep, you may just have to hold him tight, facing out, away from you and rock him; or there is the method of putting him in his crib and sitting there beside his bed (without looking at him, but just being there) and letting him cry till he lays down and goes to sleep, and then you move your chair farther away each night until you are out in the hall-my friend did this and it worked as far as getting her out of their bed and into her crib-but they still rock her and then lay her down now at 20 months old; but I personally don't like the cry it out approach. We still rock our son to sleep and he's 20 months old but we enjoy it. But I might try letting someone else get him to sleep and see if that helps and maybe he will get away from thinking he has to nurse to go to sleep.

Also, if you do rock your son, you can just rock him till he's drowsy but not fully asleep, and then lay him down so that he knows he's in his bed. That way if he wakes up, he will know where he is. We also have a bedtime routine, so my son knows it's time for bed. I or my husband will read a story, turn off the lamp, say a prayer as we rock for a few minutes, and then lay him down.

After he gets over this diahera which a viral infection is causing it I will try some of your suggestions but as far as giving him to my husband or someone else to rock asleep is not possible because my husband works nights so my and justin are by ourselves.
Anymore suggestions would be great!

Wanted to give a update...
Newpope3 I mostly took your suggestion, I nurse him for about 5 min. and lay him down telling him that I love him and I will see him when he wakes up. hell cry for a little bit but not very long I would say for about 5-10 min. I been doing this for about 3-4 days now. But im still having a issue for getting him to sleep during Nap time. Night time seems to be going good but it doesnt seem to work for nap time. plus my husband works nights so he sleeps during the day so I cant really have him cry or I should say more like scream for a hour during the day. what should I do during the day for naps. and Newpope3 did your daughter do this ok for both nights and naps and if not what did you do differently for naps than nights. thanks for the advice in advance.
