Poll By Celianne 2 Years, 5 Months Ago That hopefully has no real potential to start a fight. I'm just curious about this, because there is a bit of a debate going on. A few colleges have stopped the high-flying gymnastics from going on in their competitive cheerleading squads, and made them stick to on-ground 'ra ra ra-ing'. (I read an article, and it seems that this particular college I read about had no real reasons for doing this, they just sort of did it and dealt with the press with denials about they DID do it. Does that make sense? Instead of giving an explanation, they said, 'no, it isn't sexist.' 'no, it isn't because of the injuries'. I think the only real reason they gave was, 'trying to take the sport back to where it started.' is what it sounded like to me, but anyway...)
So... Should cheerleading be recognized as a sport? Should it be seperated from things like football and basketball, so that they can do their own thing? Leave cheerleading to less ambitious and risk-taking people, while it becomes a sort of team gymnastics in a catagory mainly on it's own? Though I am not a cheerleader, and don't really plan on doing it, ever, I think that maybe cheerleading and the 'spirit squads', which are pretty much the same thing, should be seperated. That cheerleading is and should be called an offical sport. What do you guys think?

Re:Poll By madster 2 Years, 5 Months Ago well... there is some competitive cheerleading. where people practice for hours a day and work a lot. i know cause i have friends who are major league cheerleaders. their level of cheerleading i would consider a sport. they have to do backflips and doulble hangsprings so... i m considering that a sport.
school football cheerleaders are another story. i ve seen the varsity cheerleaders and they werent all that good. they seemed bored and not excited about what they were doing... and their cheers werent very cheery. so that i would not consider a sport. so there s my opinion on cecilann s little poll.

Re:Poll By Bexie_08 2 Years, 5 Months Ago I think that highschool sideline cheerleaders should just cheer, no major stunts or tricks beyond a cartwheel or roundoff and maybe a few low flying basket tosses. I mean, people are there for the football game, not a semi nude acrobatics show. I think competition cheerleaders should go at it for all they are worth. They are really gymnasts that throw in a little rah rah.
If a school limits cheerleaders because the sport is dangerous, they should limit football to flag only.

QUOTE: Some highschool varsity teams are geniunly good though, I mean think about where the pros start? My high schools varsity cheerleading squad was actually pretty good. Specially after the instructor had recruited two males. She mainly only did that for the high flying stunts. I remember one day we had a spirit rally in the gym, and the boys tossed one of the cheerleaders so high she actually went above one of the rafters. The school cheered rather loudly, along with gasps, and ohs and awes. But I totally agree with your last statement, if they limit the cheerleaders who work just as hard, they should limit football, soccer, baseball, softball, tennis, volleyball, basketball, and all the others. Re:Poll By monkeys1315 2 Years, 5 Months Ago i've always thought cheerleading was a sport but high school cheerleading is really not that hard i did it for like a year because the couch was a friend of my moms and they needed someone to throw in the air! but i loved getting throw in the air it felt like i was flying, and i probsbly would have done it junior year had i not been pregnant. but thats all we really did was cartwheels and stuff and throwing people in the air.
