Breast Feeding vs. Formula
By iluvandy 3 Months, 2 Weeks Ago
Hi everyone! I'm not pregnant yet but when I do have a baby, I was leaning towards just bottle feeding it formula. But then I did some research and I think I'm going to breast feed because its so much healthier, But I dont want it to get hung on my boob! Especially if I'm at work and cant be there or out at a public place. I was wondering though if I could just pump all of the time into a bottle? That way I'm not the only one waking up at night the daddy can have a turn! LOL! But I need some opinions on it please, or has anyone else done this? Thanks!

I have breast feed my daughter for 18mo. I have never breastfeed in public, I'm just not comfortable with it. When I was home I breast feed her, I pumped and stored at work, and on outings we just planned them carefully; either between feedings or we would feed just before leaving and pump one for the road. Fresh breast milk is good for 4 hours unrefrigerated. I did get saddled with night time duty, but it's not so bad. She slept right next to me in a bassinet, Daddy would change the diaper, I would feed her and you don't have to burp with breastfeeding so you just but her back down. I would get my eight to twelve feedings in during the day so if she wanted to sleep longer at night I would let her. Don't believe the old saying "never wake a sleeping baby"; its bull. A breast feed baby should eat ever two to three ours even if you have to wake them up!

The decision is yours and I am sure you will do what is best for your family. Go Boobs!

LOL! Thank you! WOw it sounds like a lot of hard work. My mind keeps telling me to just do the formula because it would be so much easier but It causes a lot more problems. But my heart is telling me that I should breast feed. I dunno? I wasn't breast feed and i'm o.k. but it just seems a lot more healthier.

It's really not as hard as it seems. You don't have to get up in the middle of the night to make a bottle, your milk is always fresh; you don't have to burb; its cheaper; you don't have to deal with washing and sterilizing bottles (unless you pump one for the road or when you returen to work); there are health benifits for you and it helps you loose weight; and the health benifits for baby:

brain development
eye development
stronger immune system
less illnesses
less issues with constipation
easier digestion
bonding w/ baby
the list goes on and on!

They even say breastfeeding past the first year can help with social skills.

Just way all the pros and cons, discuss it with your husband and doctor, take some classes, and make the best decision you can with the informaiton you have. That is all you can do.

Good luck.

I completely agree with CariannDS. To me, breastfeeding was easier, and there are so many more benefits! Our son slept in the bed with us until he was 7 months old, and I never had to get up at night to feed him. He would squirm around when he was hungry, and I would wake up, get him to latch on, and go back to sleep. I never breastfed in public; like CariannDS, I would either feed him before going out, or take a bottle of pumped milk. And I would pump 4-5 oz. every morning when I would get up and store it for later in the freezer if I didn't need it that day. Starting out, it takes awhile for your baby to nurse, but as he got older, it only would take my son about 5 minutes to get full! So even if we were out and didn't have a bottle, I could find a private spot and he was finished in no time.
