If the sky was the limit then I would agree with silversky32. But I also think that giving someone your favorite childhood books and teliing the reason why it is such a special book is more meaningful.

Well my best friend of 21 years is having her first child in October I crocheted the baby a beautiful afghan (first crochet project I ever finished).. but if the sky was the limit.. a college fund would be great

If I could the perfect baby gift I would begin a baby book, give the Gerber grow up great life plan, some restaurant gift cards, 2 big boxes each of diapers and wipes, and maybe a 2yr paid maid service. I would also babysit the child 3-4 days a week so the mother can get some rest and do what she wanted and needed to do.

Apparently on one website's article, the best present to give to an expecting/new mom is homemade meals. You prepare a homemade meal then freeze one serving in each ziploc bag, freeze them overnight, then deliver the meals the following day. This way since the mother will be very busy caring for the baby she just has to empty ziploc bags in a bowl or pot or on a pan then heat and eat. The article says it's best to give 4-6 servings the first couple of months since this is one of the most hectic times during the first 3 yrs of life.
