Does anyone have a similar situation and can give me some words of wisdom of how to go about it? Allot of people are shocked by such a big gap and have scared me into thinking its going to be a nightmare.

Re:5 year age gap. Does it work? By meganrose 5 Months Ago My brother and I are 4 1/2 years apart, but I feel that the age gap was good in our case. Being I was older, I was like a little mommy! It was fun helping my mom!
P.S. We are really close now!

By Sarah 5 Months Ago I think the age gaps only a problem when the personalities clash anyway. I have an older brother whos 6 years older then me and an older sister whos 3 years older then me. My brother and i are very close because were are very similar in a lot of ways. My sister and i were constantly at each other growing up becuase we had conflicting personalites. She fought with our brother a ton too. Age i dont think is a big issue.
Just encourage your son early on to take an interst in his new brother or sister. I used to baby sit for 3 brothers, the older two were 5 and 3 when the baby came along. once he was old enough to kinda be played with by moving him around, i invented a game for the older boys that included the baby. It was called Super Baby. Their new brother was a super hero saving the day. Sometimes they were teh villans, other times his partners. They had a blast playign with him and it aliveated alot of jealousy they had been developing towards him when i came over to "play" and had to spend all my time with the baby. Worked out great. So including the baby in your sons games with you can really help out. Good luck and dont worry too much, im sure it will work out just fine.

By puck 5 Months Ago i have siblings 8,6,3,&1 years older than me and a brother 3 years younger. i get along really well with the 8&1 years older siblings, the others i am okay with i guess. i think it depends more on personality than age. i am due on thursday and my daughter is 3 1/2. hopefully things go smoothly. good luck!

Re:5 year age gap. Does it work? By PyjamaMum 5 Months Ago Like you I was a little worried about the age-gap between my children,(they are 7 years apart) but I have found so far that the gap really doesnt make a difference. The way my 8 year interacts with his 1 year old brother is fantastic.
I myself have siblings 15, 13, 11, 10, 6 years older than me and one 18 mths younger than me. I remember clearly my elder sisters caring for me when our mum had to work. Siblings will fight and annoy eachother reguardless of the age difference or sex of the children.
