5 year age gap. Does it work? (1 viewing) (1) Guest

My brother and I are 6 years apart and didn't get along until adulthood. My friend Nichole and her sister Michelle are also 6 years apart and have always been best friends. I think it has alot to do with how the parents handle the new baby and the older child. I don't think my parents handled it very well. I'm guessing my brother kinda got pushed aside when I came along and that made him resentful of me.

KimCi, I am feeling the same way. I have a 13 year gap between my current child and my baby-to-be. I'm feeling really nervous even though I've been married to my husband for 9 years. I know it's supposed to be the "happiest time of my life" but a bunch of fears and doubts are coming up and making me wonder if we really should have made this decision to have another child.

my half sister is 20 years older than me. My half brothers are 15 and 13 years older than me. we never had any problems. But then again we never really had anything to fight over. It's not like I could ever 'steal' my sister's clothes or something. She has horrible taste anyway. I really don't see 5 years being a problem. That way they're old enough to understand what's going on and even be excited and helpful.

I think 5 years apart is great.
My nieces are 5 years apart and they work well together.
The oldest(8)is old enough to watch out for her sister(3)instead of getting into trouble with her. Plus with a young baby its good to have your other child be a little more independent. It makes everything much easier!!!

But a mistake my sister-in-law made was not letting the oldest sister do something just because the younger one couldn't. Thats not fair, because some things are appropriate for a 8 year old thats not appropriate for a 3 year old, like riding your bike down the street by yourself or spending the night at a girlfriends house.

Best of Luck!
