Understanding of child's needs

Consistence! It's so important to be consistent with children.

I don't have kids yet, but I have taught high school age kids and worked at a pre-school, and it is very important to be consistent i.e. enforcing rules the same way every day, even if you're tired, and always treating everyone fairly. Most important, NO means NO. If you routinely tell your children NO to something and then give in, they will know you're a doormat and you won't be able to control their behavior. It is also important to consistently follow through on promises. If you promise your child a treat for being good in the grocery store or a special meal at their favorite restaurant for getting a good grade, you need to follow through, or they will learn to be disappointed by you. Don't make promises you can't keep. Your kids need to know you mean what you say.
