I found this. Hope it helps. Give four ounces of diluted prune juice. Prune juice is a sugary liquid and will draw water into the stomach.

The only thing a new born baby should eat prior 4 to 6 mo. is breastmilk or formula unless instructed otherwise by a doctor. The more things a baby is exposed to prior to 4 to 6 mo. of age, beyond breastmilk, can greatly effect their immune system, brain development, allergies, eye development, increase their risk for ear infection, diarea, constipation, etc.

You're welcome. It's what my aunt was told to use for her baby. I really don't know if giving this to a newborn is something a doctor would recommend. My aunt's baby was maybe one to two months old at the time. I think she should call her baby's doctor first.

vburgfirewife, thanks for posting the yahoo search. That was interesting. My first thought was to give a little bit of prune juice to atleast get some water in the stool and make it softer.

WHEN MY OLDEST WAS A NEWBORN HE GOT CONSTIPATED ALSO AND MY MOM TOLD ME GIVE HIM WATER WITH A LITTLE BIT OF KARO SYRUP IN IT. IT WORKED GREAT. WORKS JUST LIKE PRUNE JUICE BUT IT IS A LITTLE EASIER ON THEIR LIL TUMMIES!!AND IT DOESN'T TASTE AS BAD AS PRUNE JUICE SO THEY DRINK IT BETTER. I'M NOT SURE AT A WEEK BUT MY PED TOLD ME TO USE GLURICIN SUPPOSITORIES WITH MY YOUNGEST SON HE WAS ONLY A MONTH OLD AT THE TIME. I THINK YOU HAD SAID THAT THE FORMULA HE IS ON HAS EXTRA IRON IN IT? WELL THATS PROBABLY IS WHAT IS CAUSING HIM TO BE CONSTIPATED. SHE MAY HAVE TO CHANGE HIS FORMULA. MY PED TOLD ME THAT UNLESS YOUR CHILD HAS LOW IRON THEN THERE IS NO NEED TO USE A FORMULA WITH EXTRA IRON. HOPE THIS HELPS SOME.
