Dogs and new baby
By Jezebelle 3 Months, 1 Week Ago
Does anyone have any advice on how to prepare the current 'babies' ( our dogs) with the coming of our first baby? They are good dogs, but I can forsee some jealousy.....

We just took our dog in for his yearly exam and asked the vet this question. Our dog is our 'first born' so we had the same concerns. The vet said to make sure they know their place in the home, that you came fist and then them. He also said not to let them sleep in bed with you (we didn't listen to that part) and deffinatly not to let them sleep on your pillow as that is a sign of dominance. He said that dogs are like children in the way that they are more comfortable with boundaries. That way they know for sure what they can and can't do and when something goes wrong they can go to the 'boss' (you) and not have to take on so much anxiety.

We are lucky enough to have a very laid back, sweet and mellow dog who LOVES to snuggle. My biggest concern is that he's going to try to get into the cradle with the baby and cuddle him.

My daughter sent her husband home with the first hat the baby had worn after she was born. He went home and slept in their bed and put the hat on the living room floor for the dog to smell it. When they brought home the baby the next day, the dog smelled her and walked away. Now the baby is 14 months and they are best friends, the dog is gentle with her. It was like when they brought the baby home the dog had previously smelled her and didn't think anything was new by smelling the hat that was on the floor. Good luck!
