It kind of depends on what they like, but from what I've seen, little boys as a whole are always very in to trucks, and vehicles.

One of my friends has young boys one year apart, and their birthdays are very close together. She and her boyfriend built a sandbox, and engaged the boys in building it as well, so they got to hammer nails, help measure things, and pour in the sand, which was fun for them, and then for their birthdays, she got them both an assortment of things including toy trucks, beach shovels and buckets, and invited all of their friends over for a "day at the beach".

I thought it was a kind of neat idea. They borrowed an inflatable kiddie pool from someone, and it was really hot that day, so it was almost like being at the beach, which was really great for the kids because they live so far from the ocean.

Other things I've seen people give little boys include toy plastic tools (like 'pretend' screwdrivers and hammers, might be dangerous though), stuffed animals, puppets, mobiles, and wagons.

You could always ask your sons what they want, and then, if necessary, scale it down a little. For example, when I asked my son what he wanted for his birthday, he said he wanted a pet dinosaur, and one of his little friends ended up getting him a stuffy dinosaur, which he sleeps with at night!

I hope this helps, just some ideas. You could always get them art supplies, or something, if they like crafts, and then you could spend the day making things together.

Thanks Taras
I love the sandpit idea but were actually in a apartment building at the moment and no space to build a sandbox which sucks but we will make 1 when we buy our new house whenever that is.

But thanks for all the ideas

Ok Briel, I wish I had noticed this earlier.
What kind of toys do they play with most?
At 3 years old, they are so easy to please. You can go with the whole Vehicle theme. Maybe the movie "Cars". So go to the cheapest store you can find and buy little cars, trucks motorcylcles, etc, and lay them around on the table cloth as decoration, and the cake can be in the shape of one or decorated with ones.

Maybe they like dinosaurs...same thing.

Disney stuff?
Will they each have their own cake or share?
If you have a dollar store near you, go there and look at their party stuff.
Even in an apartment you can have a day at the beach.

Lay a large blanket on the floor, have little buckets and shovels, goggles, sea toys, sun glasses hats...picnic items you would take to the beach, have their meal on the beach blanket.
make it simple, chicken fingers, sandwiches, burgers, cold fried chicken and chips and fruit. An end of Summer party. It is all about make believe at this age.You can blow bubbles at them and have them catch them. Music in the background.

Will there be other there? Other small kids? goodie bags are always nice, especially at this age, it gives the other kids something to play with.No bubbles, as your carpet will be ruined.

You do not have to spend a lot of money for a party. Things can be done inexpensively.

My son, when he turned 4 wanted a Mickey Mouse cake. I went to a Bakery that sold unique cookies, bought a giant Mickey Mouse cookie, came home, baked a cake , iced it and put the big cookie in the middle. he loved it, and it was much less costly had we had a special cake ordered.

Are they into balls? Again, a Dollar store, balls of every shape and size, all around your living room. Decorate the cake with shapes of balls.

I hope this helps a little bit. 4;30 in the morning here and couldn't sleep, but trying!!

If I can help further please let me know.
