I started smoking when I was 12 but quit when I was 19 or 20 dont remember exactly. I knew I didnt want to smoke when I was pregnant so I figured better now than later....I couldnt imagine taking a single puff while I was pregnant much less smoking for the entire pregnancy...I find it shameful sorry to anyone that does...

non-smoker

but smoking can give the baby respiratory problems, low birth weight, and can deliver prematurely.

I've been an on/off smoker since i was 17 i'm afraid. I quit the second i found out i was pregnant with my daughter at 18 & didn't start again until it came to a rather stressful time that was our wedding in 2007. Quit again with this pregnancy, & am hoping i'm smart enough to not start EVER AGAIN. My hubby still smokes the odd one but is slowly cutting down.

I think it's straight out SELFISH to smoke while pregnant, & to also smoke around children. Fair enough to stuff our own bodies up as adults but to harm our little ones either while pregnant or through passive smoking is wrong.

Saying that though... Working in a womens health hospital i came across women who had been heavy smokers for 10-20+ years & because of the stress quitting can put the body through (without being pregnant too) they were recommended to just cut down as opposed to quitting in a hurry. And that was from medical professionals. I always found that interesting, & try to keep that in mind.
