Cant decide if a family name is the way to go
By Brittany Leann 9 Months, 1 Week Ago
I am 17 weeks pregnant and have debating on the name Dylan Douglas..Douglas being my grandfathers name which has been passed down to my dad and my brother as a middle name. But im not quite sure if this family name is the way to go. People have been asking me constantly what names im thinking of and when i reply with Dylan Douglas they dont like Douglas with it.Im just so confused, i really want to give my son a name that means something but at the same time be cute.

I really like them together. I like to try give a baby a unique first name that they can make their own, and use family names for middle names. I think it's important to tie a child into their history and middle names are a great way to do that, especially if there is already a tradition involved.

I agree with Rayleen! I feel that the first name should be truly unique for the child but a family name as the middle name gives them a connection for the rest of their lives. I think it passes down honor and dignity and something special to be proud of. I love Dylan Douglas together. I feel it flows well together! Good luck with you decision! And after all how many times will the child be called by their first and middle names together except maybe graduation? I think the family connection it gives overrides the slight dislike of the name. My grandfather's middle name is Greer and I will use it no matter how much I feel like it doesn't fit for a baby's name. It's the thought that counts!

I'm glad I could help - I know how hard it is when people are down on a name you like, it happened to me with my daughter, and I wish I hadn't caved. Her name is Emma Melina, which I like but I didn't realize at the time how popular Emma was. Her first name would nave been Aylan, but all I kept hearing was how strange that was. I think it's unique, feminine and not too out there! Oh well, that's why we're not telling anyone what the name of our second ababy is going to be. After all, it's your choice, not theirs. And like I posted somewhere else, if they really can't learn to live with it - and I'm sure most people can - they could always come up with a nickname for the baby that would be a special bond between the two of them.

That is GREAT advice Rayleen! I hope all goes well with the birth of your second child! Stick with the names you love and don't worry about anyone else's opinion. Your heart knows your baby and you will know what is best for him/her! Good luck!
