packing hospital bags, help!
By Shann 2 Years, 3 Months Ago
I think I have packed my hospital bags, but i just want to make sure I haven't forgotten anything! Especially since I may need them anytime now...
I anyone could help me with a checklist and quantities of things like nappies, maternity pads, breast pads, underwear.. etc, expected to be needed for a two or three night stay, that would be really great.

Also... how many bags should I take? One for labour, one for baby and one for me after labour?? and what should go in each bag?

I just really need a fresh list, coz i'm not sure if i've left anything out.

Thanks in advance

Actually I don't really think you need to pack too many things. For you, you will probably just stay there for two days (if vaginal birth) or four days (if C-section).

Once you get admitted in the hospital, all you will be wearing is just the hospital gown, probably even without under pants. So you probably just need a set of clothes prepared in bag for the day when you check out.

And when you stay there, you will need:
tooth brush,
tooth paste,
hair brush,
socks,
under wears,
pajamas (you may still be wearing hospital gown),
skin products (if you need),
pads (this is important because you will be bleeding A LOT after giving birth, but hospital has the extra think pads)

Note: definitely bring something to entertain yourself, like laptops, books, movies, etc.

For baby, nothing much really. Just remember to get him/her little shirt and pants on the day when check out, because he/she will need those to ride in the car seat. I forgot about the pants, because my newborn was always presented as a burrito. But most of the time, he/she will just be wrapped in blankets. Hospital should provide most of the needed items, like diapers, blankets and even formulas (if you don't have milk yet).

Last but not least, document your memories! Bring camera!

This is coming from my experience. Other moms may have more to add on.

I'm taking pad paper and a pen and documenting my feelings and just quirky things that happen while I'm in labour- maybe it will just be a strange thing the hubby says or does or a picture on the wall that's really pissing me off. Hey, I might not even write anything down but to me it's special to get the chance. Also don't forget to get the hubby/partner, a relative or a friend to pick up a universal newspaper on the day baby is born, great for them to see what was happening in the world the day they were born (great way to let them know that the world doesn't revolve around them too lol). Best wishes.

Yep, one bag should do it. Take your necesities tooth brush, tooth paste, hair brush, socks, pads, panties, and a robe to wear over your hospital gown, 2 going home outfits for baby (diff sizes in case one doesn't fit), receiving blanket, a couple of onsies, and some puzzle books, a novel, or something to do.

I just got this off a website, so I don't know if it'll be useful as I don't have any experience on this subject and hope I don't for at least 8-10years.

What to pack for labour
Your birth plan and maternity notes.
Dressing gown. (This will be useful if you end up pacing hospital corridors in early labour and you'll need one on the postnatal ward. Hospitals can be very warm, so a lightweight one may be better.)
Slippers
Socks. (Believe it or not, your feet can get cold during labour.)
Massage oil or lotion (if you would like to be massaged during your labour.)
Lip balm.
Snacks and drinks (for you while you are in labour. Isotonic sports drinks are good or bring some glucose tablets to keep you going.)
Things to help you relax or pass the time (such as books, magazines, games and so on.)
Toiletries
Music to listen to. (Take a battery-operated machine, as most hospitals won't let you plug things in. Some hospitals provide their own CD players or radios - again, check first.)

For after the birth
A going-home outfit. (You'll need loose comfortable clothes to wear while you're in hospital and for the journey home. It will take a while for your tummy to go down, so you'll be still wearing maternity clothes when you come home.)
Nursing bras. (Take two or three.)
Breast pads
Maternity pads. (Bring a couple of packs.)
Nightshirt or T-shirt. (Front-opening shirts are useful in the early days of breastfeeding.)
Toiletries
Towels, hairbrush, toothbrush and toothpaste.
Old or cheap knickers, or disposable knickers. (Don't bring your best ones as they will get messy.)

For baby
An infant car seat. (Some hospitals won't let you leave by car without one.)
One outfit for the trip home (all-in-one stretchy outfits are easiest.)
Two or three sleepsuits and vests for baby (to wear while you are in hospital.)
Baby blanket. (Take a warm one if the weather is cold.)
Nappies
One pair of socks or booties.
Hat
Jacket or snowsuit (for winter babies.)

I just put in the ones I thought were relevant.
As I said, I have no experience in this department, but I hope it was helpful.
