Water
By Shann 1 Year, 11 Months Ago
my son is 4 months old, and I am trying to get him to drink a bit of cooled boiled water to prevent mild constipation. The pharmacist today told me I could add some honey into the water to make it taste nicer for him (my problem is he wont drink plain water). To me, water and honey wouldn't taste too nice. Do you know of anything else safe for a 4 month old that could go in water?

You are NOT supposed to give a baby honey!!!!! It can contain clostridium botulinum that breeds and becomes Botulism and can kill a baby.

Rather than just water, add a half ounce (a slosh) of apple juice to a bottle of water and see if he tolerates it. If it doesn't make him poo, add a little more apple and a little less water next time.

Are you giving the baby real food? Rice cereal, bananas, and carrots are common causes of constipation.

How long has it been since baby made a poo?

What other symptoms are you noticing?

Yeah, I dint think the honey suggestion sounded quite right lol

He hates rice cereal lol so I have decided to hold off on the babyfood for a little bit, but occasionally i will give him some apple, pear and banana puree... but that has only been three or so times. He isnt going days on end without a bowel motion anymore, but now he just seems to be pushing quite hard all the time (red face, grunting noises), and it seems like quite a chunky poo for a small baby (excuse the disgustingness, lol)

I also think he may be starting to teeth, no evidence of teeth yet, but i think his gums may just be hurting as teeth may be trying to push through. (he is chewing on everything in reach)

I'm not sure about giving ordinary apple juice that i would drink, or baby juice drinks? to add to the water...

I think the only baby juices i have seen are 6mth+... so i dont know what to do really lol

Add a little apple juice.
My aunty always diluted the apple juice with water for my cousin, so I recon you could do the same. Dilute the water with apple juice.

Just regular apple juice that you would drink is fine. Start out with only a little bit diluted in water or you may end up with a massive case of runny poop on your hands (and on everything else). Lol.

I agree with the other. Apple juice. But not too much!!! We made that mistake with my son. He was constipated and we gave him about 2 1/2 bottles of apple juice at dinner one night and well the dinner lasted about 2 hours and by when we went to take him out of his highchair (he was 8 months old) there was poo running all down the side.. (gross I know)
