I thought maybe it was some mistake too. But I don't know, I need to ask my grandma if she's heard anything. I mean who talks to a kid for a few minutes and can think they've determined anything about them?

my sister was a year younger than all the kids in her grade and still is. They tried to keep her back a year based on that even tough she was in the top of her class and was better adjusted than a lot of the kids. We had to fight tooth and nail to get her pushed forward. Plus when I was in high school they discovered that I needed a self based learning program instead of group cuz I got bored or irritated when it was too fast or too slow. I couldn't do the program that I wanted unless I was classified special ed now I have an iq of 140 so I'm not stupid I just learn things on my own a whole lot better than if someone is standing in front of me.

I just want to throw one more possiablity into the loop. I personally was in what was technically "specal ed" for about 3 years and kept an IEP (individual education plan) for a number after that. However it was because I was exeptionally bright. Your aunt may want to look and see which version of special ed her daughter is being put into to in case it is in fact an advanced placement class. We called in intelectually gifted but it goes by other names in different places. The test I took that was in person not written covered an ablity to recognize certain patterns and make certain conections about substances like ice and diamonds. I personally was in grade 5 when I was tested but I know there are some for younger students and that some schools do start earlier than that for the program. I would ask them a bunch of questions since the written letters home from the schools aren't always as clear as one would hope.

Special Ed is not a term really used anymore. Its just an IEP and maybe some individualized classes. They may be doing this to work with her one on one , expecially if she is a bit over active. It most likely has absolutely nothing with how smart she is. I have a son who has been on an IEP due to the fact he has a hard time being calm in class. He leaves the class a few times a day and they work with him in smaller groups. He is not slow, he is now the leader in grades in his classrooms. Try not to look at it as bad untill you understand it. Usually teachers know what their doing, but as her parent, they have the right and responcibility to question it.

They put my older brother in a 'special ed' kindergarten class because he was complaining about the books and the teacher couldn't handle him. The teacher pretty much said 'I'm not teaching that kid, he's smarter than I am!' Her excuse was that he wasn't reading the books, and she thought he couldn't. so she shoved him into the special class. Turns out, he was simply dead bored. He wasn't reading the books because they were too EASY. Just tell them to talk to the school, she'll be put in the right class.
