Hi,

Knowing when to start is such an individual choice.
No one certain time, whether a child is 18 months old or 3 years old, is set in stone.
Each child is so different.
Starting too early because you want to be done with diapers, and who could blame any mother for that, especially realizing how expensive they are, is a waste of time and aggravation.
My mother, God love her, always bragged that I was trained by the time I was 9 months old! I say that she was the one trained! It definitely was not me! There is no way a child at that age can have control over bodily functions.
Your child will train quite easily when they are ready. Personally, I have found boys tend to be trained when they are older than the girls tend to be. That being said, I am sure there are exceptions.
Some mothers, I've met seemed to have a self-imposed competition as to whose child gets trained first.
As far as I know there have been no Gold Medals awarded to anyone!

I have a friend whose daughter would pee in the potty at 8 months old! They discovered it accidently one night when her husband had undressed her to give her to her mother in the bath. She wasn't ready to get her, so he held her over the toliet, and she peed! They thought it was funny, and they tried it again the next day, and they said, "teetee" and she did! So after that, her mother would just take her every hour or so, take her diaper off, and say, "teetee" and she would!

Exactly . . . The mother was trained on the hour to put her daughter on the toilet.

I am not trying to rush my son into potty training. I was just asking advice from other mothers out there.

Oh, hon, I know that you were just asking for input.
My comments were only meant to say that there was no set time line and no need for speed, that it's okay to wait until the child is older and truly ready. I emphasized the difference between a 'child' being potty trained and the 'mother' being potty trained based on my own personal history.
I sincerely apologize if that, in any way, upset you.

In babysitting my grandchildren, daily for the last seven years, from the time they were newborn until they entered school, I was naturally involved with their potty training.
My daughter had the potty chair out and was hopeful they would start training but the novelty of the potty chair wore off pretty quickly for them because they really weren't ready.
In my experience, the time to start training is when they wake up and are dry every morning for a week or two. They would go potty and then put the pull-up back on. It's a hit and miss success for a time but within a week or two it becomes very routine.
I just made it a point to ask if they had to go about 15-20 minutes after eating. There were occasional accidents, but only because they were too busy playing outside to come inside. Our son-in-law was the one who showed his son the 'stand up routine' as I call it.

Our granddaughter wasn't potty trained until she was in a 3 year olds pre-school program while our grandson was trained before pre-school. My daughter, on the other hand, was trained just after she was 26 months old. She was dry day and night and was just ready. It wasn't planned. Although, it was a blessing since I had delivered her brother four months before. He was 3 when he was trained. Each child's timing is so different.
Good luck!
